Pak Chong
The Upland Gateway to Khao Yai, Bangkok's Weekend Country of Forest, Farms and Vineyards
Explore the Town ↓Life in Pak Chong
Vineyards, farms and Khao Yai’s forested hills draw Bangkok weekenders to the country around Pak Chong. The town is a practical gateway; the glorious countryside is the main attraction.
Pak Chong is a market town on the rim of the Khorat Plateau at the gate of Khao Yai, a UNESCO forest of wild elephants and hornbills. It has cooler air than the plains, vineyards and dairy farms, and Bangkok is a two-and-a-half-hour drive away.
Pak Chong is the only upland, countryside option in this Atlas. It lies outside all regulated seismic zones and is the closest of the eight to Bangkok.
- The town itself is a plain highway market.
- Flash floods run off the Khao Yai slopes.
- Land titles near the park need care.
- Weekend traffic from Bangkok is heavy.
- Bangkok is about 180 km away, roughly 2 hr 30 min by road, and Don Mueang airport about 2 hr.
- Six trains a day run to Bangkok, the fastest in 2 hr 33 min.
- There is no local airport.
