Town Overview

Life in Óbidos

Walk the walls above white houses and narrow lanes, then head out toward the coast. Óbidos is a compact historic setting for weekends, festivals and a second home.

The Appeal

Óbidos is one of the most perfect walled medieval towns anywhere: a UNESCO City of Literature with a castle you can sleep in and cherry liqueur served in chocolate cups.

Why It Made the Shortlist

Óbidos is small and spellbinding, with the Silver Coast beaches on one side and Lisbon within an hour on the other.

Worth Knowing
  • Crowds fill the walled town in season.
  • Homes inside the walls carry a price premium.
  • Daily errands are mostly run in neighboring Caldas da Rainha.
  • The central coast has seismic exposure.
Getting There

Lisbon airport is about an hour by road. There is no useful train. Express buses run from Lisbon, but a car makes house-hunting and the wider region far easier.
