Town Overview

Life in Tomar

The Convent of Christ rises above a town of river walks and Templar history. Tomar is a quieter Portuguese base for anyone who prefers a small town to a big city.

The Appeal

Tomar is the town of the Knights Templar. Its hilltop Convento de Cristo is a UNESCO wonder and the spiritual home of the Discoveries, and the town keeps Portugal’s only substantially intact, almost unaltered fifteenth-century synagogue building.

Why It Made the Shortlist

Tomar offers world-class heritage at some of the lowest prices in this Atlas, in gentle river country.

Worth Knowing

Wildfire is a risk in the pine hinterland, and the train is slow, so you will want to drive.

Getting There

Lisbon is about an hour and a half by car; the train is slower, at about two hours.
