FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

A Great Trip Starts
with a Few Good Questions.

What’s included? How do the visits work? Which Atlas should you choose? Find the practical details here, from your first saved sight to a closer look at life abroad.

Discover & Travel

Find the sights you came for, and leave room for a few discoveries.

Is This for a Vacation, a Second Home or a Move?

All three. For a vacation, the app puts city sights, self-guided visits, saved places and trip planning together. You can spend a week exploring Rome and Florence without ever opening a property chapter.

If a place starts to feel like somewhere you could live, the country Atlases help you look further: everyday services, getting around, property questions and local risks. On first use, choose Travel First, Travel + Atlas or Atlas First. Change it in Settings whenever your plans change. Both sides stay easy to reach.

Which Countries and Places Can I Explore?

The current app includes 24,587 place records across 14 countries, covering major cities as well as smaller destinations. Think museums, historic sites, markets, gardens, local food and places to spend time outdoors.

  • Europe: France, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Greece, the United Kingdom, Germany and the Netherlands.
  • Beyond Europe: Canada, Mexico, Australia, Japan, South Korea and Thailand.

Think of it as a discovery catalog, not 24,587 tours; coverage varies by destination and interest. The 116 Atlas towns are a separate, smaller shortlist researched for people considering a second home or a move. Explore the Place Catalog →

How Do I Find Places That Match My Interests?

Start with a country in Explore, search for a city or landmark, then narrow the results by region or interest.

  • Pick a mood: culture and history, food and local life, or outdoors and downtime.
  • Open a place: see its description, estimated visiting time, source information and a website link where one is supplied.

Save a good find to Ideas, then come back to it through Saved in the top menu. Browsing another country does not change your existing trip. Place details also show review information, known closures and entries still being checked, so you can tell inspiration apart from the practical details to confirm before you go.

Self-Guided Visits

A little context, a suggested order and time to explore your way.

How Many Self-Guided Visits Are Included, and Where?

The current app has 18 self-guided visits across all 14 countries. Each one links six or seven stops, with written notes, a suggested order, directions and saved progress.

  • Italy: Ancient Rome, Florence, Venice and a separate Vatican visit.
  • United Kingdom: Westminster to Bloomsbury, and the City of London with the South Bank.
  • Elsewhere in Europe: Paris, Lisbon’s Belém district, Madrid, Athens, Berlin and Amsterdam.
  • Beyond Europe: Toronto, Sydney, Tokyo, Seoul, Bangkok and Mexico City.

These are hand-picked city visits inside a much larger place catalog. You can still explore other cities and plan trips there wherever the catalog has suitable places. See all 18 self-guided visits →

What Is a Self-Guided Visit Like?

Open Tours and choose a visit. In Rome, for example, the list takes you from the Colosseum and Forum toward Trevi, the Pantheon and Piazza Navona. Each stop has a short introduction, fuller place details, an estimated visiting time and a Directions button.

Follow the suggested order or start wherever you like.

  • Pause anytime: mark a stop as visited, break for lunch and come back later. Your progress saves on the phone.
  • Plan your time: the visit time shown covers time at the sights, so allow extra for travel, queues and breaks.
  • Check ahead: confirm venue hours and ticket requirements before deciding how much to fit into your day.
Do Visits Include Audio, a Guide or Admission Tickets?

The visits are designed for exploring independently, with written place notes. There is no human guide, narrated audio or GPS-triggered commentary, so you explore freely. Admission tickets and bookable experiences are bought separately.

Some place pages include a website or reference link, so you can look into the venue and its booking options.

  • Their terms: the destination site handles its own prices, availability and purchase.
  • Reminders, not tickets: a booking reminder in your itinerary prompts you to arrange admission. It is not a reservation or a ticket.
  • Busy sights: for a popular museum or timed entry, book ahead through your chosen service and keep the confirmation handy.

Your Trip, Your Way

Turn good ideas into a plan you can return to and make your own.

How Do I Start a Trip and Continue It Later?

Choose your destination, available time and pace, then rate the interests that appeal to you. A trip with art museums and architecture can take a different shape from one built around food, gardens and time outdoors.

Your choices save as you go. If you leave before finishing, Home and Trips show Continue Planning and return you to the same step. Once the itinerary is built, use Open Itinerary. The saved status helps you see whether you are still making choices or already have a plan. Use New Trip when you want to begin a different journey.

Can I Change the Itinerary or Keep Several Trips?

Yes. Add a place from Explore or search for your own place by name or address. The app helps fit it into a suitable day; your edited days save with the trip. If changing the original planning choices would rebuild those days, the app warns you and offers a way to keep a copy.

Traveler and Atlas Member let you keep several trips and start another without replacing the current one. On Free or Trip Pass, starting another trip can replace the open trip after confirmation. Use Export first if you want a separate backup. A name such as “October in Italy” makes saved trips easier to recognize.

Can We Plan Around Both Travelers’ Interests?

Yes. Traveling Together lets one person send an invitation link and the other rate their interests, and both sets of preferences shape the plan equally. It is perfect when one of you wants galleries and the other would happily spend the morning at a market.

Sending an invitation is included with Traveler and Atlas Member; answering one is free. Both people need the app. Your companion sends their ratings back by link, so this is an exchange of preferences rather than a shared itinerary that updates live on two phones. If rebuilding would affect edited days, keep a copy before applying the new ratings.

Can I Get Directions From My Hotel and Back?

Yes. Open Directions on a place or itinerary stop and choose where to begin:

  • Current Location for wherever you are now.
  • Hotel / Address for a saved starting point in that city.
  • Previous Stop when it is available for the visit.

Choose walking, transit or driving, then open the journey in Apple Maps or Google Maps. They supply the route, current travel time and navigation, and a saved address gives you an easy way back. The app does not book hotels: arrange your stay with your preferred service, then add the address. Check the entrance and map pin before setting off.

The Country Atlases

Look beyond a vacation to a second home or a different everyday life.

What Will a Country Atlas Help Me Decide?

A lovely weekend is a good reason to return. A second home or a move calls for a closer look. Each country Atlas brings a researched shortlist of towns together with the details that matter beyond the vacation: transport, everyday services, scenery and culture, property considerations and local risks.

Use it to compare places, narrow your search and prepare better questions for a visit. The full collection covers 116 towns in 14 countries. It is town research rather than a property listing, and it shows you which inspections and local checks to arrange when you find a home you love. Find a Country Atlas →

What Can I Preview Before Buying an Atlas?

Plenty. On this website you can:

  • Explore every country and its shortlisted towns
  • See the photography and read each town’s introduction
  • Get a feel for the setting and the questions the research covers
  • Read sample pages: start with the Dossiers page, then open a country overview

The full town chapters and country research are in the paid Atlas. Buy the country PDF and keep it forever, or read the collection inside the app while your Atlas Member subscription is active. The app’s town summaries are a great starting point, not the complete dossier. See the Atlases and Samples →

Does the Atlas Help With Renting Out a Home or Visiting Possible Towns?

The rental research asks the practical questions:

  • The rules: can a home be rented out under local rules, and what permissions may be needed?
  • The demand: how seasonal is it?
  • The limits: it shows what to investigate before you count on rental income.

For seeing places firsthand, Atlas Member includes Scouting Trips. Choose two to four Atlas towns, assign nights, use a checklist and score what matters to you, such as healthcare, markets or the commute. Export your ranked shortlist as a PDF. The suggested town order is approximate; check actual travel routes in Maps.

Plans & Purchases

Choose the travel tools and country research that fit your plans.

What Can I Try for Free?

Free gives you room to find out what appeals to you:

  • Browse countries, Atlas town summaries and the place catalog.
  • Read and follow the self-guided city visits.
  • Rate your interests and make a one-day plan, or see Day 1 of a longer plan.
  • Use the Stay Counter and bundled offline place information.
  • Export your data, restore a backup and answer a trip invitation.

Each paid plan adds more. Trip Pass opens the full multi-day planner and Today, Traveler adds unlimited saved trips and planning together, and Atlas Member adds the full Atlas collection. Explore the places first, then pick the plan that fits.

How Do Trip Pass, Traveler and Atlas Member Differ?

Choose by the kind of planning you want to do:

  • Trip Pass: every day of the planner and Today for 30 days from purchase. It does not renew automatically.
  • Traveler: Trip Pass features, plus unlimited saved trips and Traveling Together. Monthly and annual options are offered in the app.
  • Atlas Member: Traveler features, the complete illustrated dossiers for all 14 countries, Atlas Watch alerts and Scouting Trips.

You see current prices, renewal terms and any trial for your Apple Account in the app before you buy. Pick Traveler for the journeys, and Atlas Member when you also want the full country research.

Should I Buy a Country PDF or Choose Atlas Member?

Have one country in mind? A standalone PDF is the simple choice. Buy it on the website, read it in your favorite PDF reader and keep it for good, even after an app subscription ends.

Atlas Member suits people who want the travel tools alongside access to all 14 country dossiers inside the app, plus Atlas Watch and Scouting Trips. That in-app access lasts while membership is active. A website PDF purchase and an Apple app subscription are separate purchases; neither automatically unlocks the other. Compare the Country Atlases →

How Do I Manage a Subscription or Restore purchases?

Open Membership & Billing in the app and choose Manage subscription to reach Apple’s subscription controls. Use Restore purchases if an active purchase is not showing, including after moving to another phone with the same Apple Account. App prices and renewal details come from Apple.

Trip Pass lasts 30 days and does not automatically renew. When paid access ends, the app returns to its free features. Your saved trips and exports are retained, but features tied to the paid plan, including full dossier reading, need an active entitlement. Restoring purchases restores access; restoring your trip data is a separate backup step.

Before You Go

Offline use, saved plans and the details worth sorting before departure.

What Can I Use Without an Internet Connection?

Plenty works offline, so you can read on a train or keep roaming switched off:

  • Place information: the country place details are built into the app.
  • Your trip: Atlas town summaries, saved plans and visit progress stay on the phone.
  • Atlas Member: the full dossiers are built in for offline reading while your access is active.

Websites, current tickets and opening information, new map searches and live directions need a connection or that provider’s own offline features.

  • Maps: download them in your chosen map app before you travel. The Shortlist Atlas does not include its own offline street-map navigation.
  • Before you leave: open the app, check the plan and save the confirmations you will need separately.
How Do I Back Up My Plans or Bring in Saved Places?

In Settings, open Backup, Import & Privacy. Export everything creates a file containing your trips, edited days, ideas, shortlist, stay log and scouting scores. Save it somewhere you can reach from another phone, then use Restore from an export to bring it back.

You can also enable iCloud backup and use Restore from iCloud to retrieve the last available copy on your Apple Account. This is backup and restore, not live syncing between devices.

Already have a list? Import accepts supported Google Maps Takeout files or a CSV with name, latitude and longitude. They arrive as saved places; importing a list does not reserve or schedule what is on it.

What Does the Stay Counter Do?

It keeps your recorded stays together and helps you see how a proposed trip affects the app’s rolling Schengen day count. Add past stays, try different future dates and lengths, and export your day log when you want a record outside the app.

Enter stays yourself, or switch on optional location-based logging, which records the day and country once you give permission.

  • Check the log: review the history for missing or incorrect days before relying on a result.
  • A planning tool: it helps you track your days; your visa, residence and tax position depend on your own circumstances.
Can I Personalize the App and Control My Data?

Yes. Settings lets you change Home’s travel or Atlas focus, choose a home destination, manage saved starting addresses and select your temperature display. Calm Backgrounds stops the drifting animation and also respects Reduce Motion.

Your travel data starts on your phone; there is no separate Atlas account. iCloud backup is on by default and can be switched off in You; location-based day logging stays off until you turn it on. Opening a route or website passes the relevant information to that service. Settings includes export and deletion controls.

For a quick introduction, choose Take the App Walkthrough in Settings or the top Menu. It opens examples of discovery, saved places, trips, visits and the Atlas. Read the Privacy Details →

Where Can I Get the App or Ask for Help?

The iOS app is coming soon to the App Store. The screens and recording on this website show the app in development, and the App page will carry the download link as soon as it is available. There is no Android version at this time.

You can explore the country previews and buy standalone Atlas PDFs now. To see how the travel experience works, watch the app walkthrough.

For a question or an out-of-date place detail, visit Support or email support@theshortlistatlas.com. Include the country, place and what needs attention. The app’s correction option adds the place details to the email for you.
