Town Overview

Life in Gongju

A fortress above the Geum and royal tombs recall Gongju’s years as a Baekje capital. It is a smaller heritage base, right next to Sejong and Daejeon.

The Appeal

Gongju is a small, unhurried river town that was once a royal capital. It has the Gongsanseong fortress above the Geum River, the tomb of King Muryeong (found intact in 1971) and the UNESCO mountain temple of Magoksa, with Sejong and Daejeon next door.

Why It Made the Shortlist

Gongju offers deep heritage at an easy, affordable scale in the middle of the country, next to the administrative capital. It sits in Zone I, the standard band of Korea’s seismic code, far from typhoon surge.

Worth Knowing

The Geum River floods: in July 2023 floodwater reached the roof of Gongsanseong’s riverside Manharu pavilion. The KTX station is about 15 km out of town, with far fewer trains than Osong, and the economy is quiet.

Getting There
  • Gongju KTX station is about 15 km south, with 18 trains a day to Seoul’s Yongsan station in about 1 hr.
  • Osong and Daejeon KTX stations are about 35 km away.
  • About 11 airport buses a day run to Incheon.
