Nong Khai
The Slow Mekong Town at the End of the Line, with a Foreign Capital Across the Bridge
Explore the Town ↓Life in Nong Khai
Evening walks beside the Mekong, a border market and temples set the pace in Nong Khai. The town is a quieter Isan base, with Vientiane just across the river.
Nong Khai is a small, relaxed riverside town on the Mekong, with a promenade, a market, a surreal sculpture park, the Friendship Bridge to Laos and a train that now runs across the river into Vientiane.
Nong Khai is the most characterful small town in the northeast. It sits in the lowest regulated seismic band, with Udon Thani’s airport and hospitals about an hour away and Vientiane closer still.
The Mekong broke its banks in September 2024 and flooded parts of the town. The condo market is so thin that a foreign buyer here will almost certainly lease rather than own.
- Fly to Udon Thani, about 60 km south, then drive roughly an hour.
- Or take the train from Bangkok to Nong Khai station, 624 km.
