Tongyeong
A Working Harbor and an Island-Filled Sea
Explore the Town ↓Life in Tongyeong
A working harbor, island ferries and a table shaped by the sea give Tongyeong its character. Naval history and music add depth to a town best enjoyed slowly and on foot.
Tongyeong is Korea’s most characterful harbor town: a working port on a peninsula tip, a sea of islands in Hallyeohaesang National Park, Admiral Yi Sun-sin’s naval headquarters, a UNESCO Creative City of Music and the best oysters in the country.
Tongyeong earns its place on culture and setting, which are superb. Two weaknesses push it down the list: there is no railway, and it has the highest typhoon exposure of the eight.
Plan around the weather and the distance:
- Typhoons: they landed on neighboring Geoje in 2022 and 2023, and over 700 mm of rain in August 2026 brought island landslides.
- Coast: surge on reclaimed land.
- Access: no rail yet, and the regional emergency center is in Jinju.
- About 15 express buses a day run to Seoul in about 4 hr 10 min.
- Sacheon airport is about an hour away, with flights to Seoul’s Gimpo airport.
- Busan’s Gimhae airport is about an hour and a half away.
