Life in Niagara-on-the-Lake

Theater, vineyards and historic streets bring visitors to Niagara-on-the-Lake all season. It is a one-of-a-kind Ontario setting for anyone who loves culture and wine country.

The Appeal

Niagara-on-the-Lake is a Georgian and Regency old town at the mouth of the Niagara River, home of the Shaw Festival since 1962, with Fort George on the riverbank and icewine vineyards at the edge of the streets.

Why It Made the Shortlist

Niagara-on-the-Lake has the easiest US access on the list, with Buffalo’s airport about an hour away across the Lewiston-Queenston bridge. Its festival season runs deep into the year, and natural hazards are modest away from the bluffs.

Worth Knowing

Plan around these points:

  • The town is inside a census area covered by Canada’s federal ban on non-Canadian buyers, currently set to end on 1 January 2027. Ontario’s 25 percent Non-Resident Speculation Tax applies as well, during the ban and after it.
  • It has Niagara’s highest prices and busy summer crowds.
  • There is no emergency department in town.
Getting There
  • Buffalo Niagara airport is about 65 km away, about an hour plus the border crossing.
  • Toronto Pearson airport is about 120 km away, 1 hr 30 min to 2 hr by road.
