Bamberg
A World Heritage City on the Regnitz
Explore the Town ↓Life in Bamberg
The old town hall stands in the river, and historic streets lead to local breweries and hilltop views. Bamberg combines a World Heritage setting with university life and everyday city services.
Bamberg is a whole UNESCO World Heritage town of hills, river islands and market gardens: a cathedral on one bank, a town hall standing in the river, smoked beer still poured from the wooden cask, and the ICE line between Munich and Berlin.
Bamberg is the most complete package on the German list:
- Seismically quiet: Bamberg lies outside all seismic zones on the official table of the German Institute for Building Technology (DIBt).
- Lower tax: Bavaria’s purchase tax is 3.5 percent, against 5 to 6.5 percent elsewhere.
- A real town: about 77,000 people, with a university and a large hospital.
The prettiest streets are the ones the Regnitz floods. The Bavarian Environment Agency (LfU) maps flood areas through the island town and Klein-Venedig, so check every address. The nearest airport, Nuremberg, has no nonstop flights to the US.
- Nuremberg is 34 minutes away by train.
- Munich is 1 hr 52 min away by direct ICE train.
- Frankfurt airport is 2 hr 30 min by rail with one change.
- Both major airports are about 2 hr 15 min away by road.
