Chiang Mai

Seven Centuries of Lanna Culture Inside a Moat

Explore the Town ↓
Town Overview

Life in Chiang Mai

Moated streets, temples and markets give Chiang Mai real cultural depth, with Doi Suthep above the city. Its healthcare and air connections make longer stays easy, but the smoke season is a major part of the decision.

The Appeal

Chiang Mai has seven centuries of Lanna culture inside a square moat, hundreds of temples, craft villages, universities, the best hospitals outside Bangkok and an international airport minutes from the old city.

Why It Made the Shortlist

Chiang Mai is Thailand’s second cultural capital, and no guide to living in Thailand could leave it out. Worth knowing: it does not pass our natural-risk screen, so it suits buyers whose plans weigh its strengths against its hazards for part of the year.

Worth Knowing
  • Severe smoke from the burning season arrives every spring.
  • The city is in seismic Zone 3, Thailand’s highest regulated band.
  • The Ping River set a record flood in October 2024.
Getting There
  • Chiang Mai International is a few kilometers from the old city.
  • From the US, it is one stop via Taipei or Seoul.
  • Bangkok is about 1 hr 10 min away by air.
