Suncheon
The Reed-Bay City of the South Coast, Sheltered Behind Two Peninsulas
Explore the Town ↓Life in Suncheon
Reedbeds and tidal flats open onto Suncheon Bay, with a living walled village and mountain temples nearby. Suncheon also has KTX rail, healthcare and everyday city services.
Suncheon is a working southern city at the head of Suncheon Bay, a tidal wetland inside a UNESCO World Heritage listing. It has a walled Joseon village still lived in, two great mountain temples, a KTX station and a small airport a short drive away.
Suncheon offers the best all-round balance on the list: a sheltered bay with lower direct typhoon exposure than the open south coast, Zone I, the standard band of Korea’s seismic code, real hospitals and shops, and visitors all year.
- With about 273,000 people, it is larger than this Atlas usually covers, and modern apartment districts surround the sights.
- River and reclaimed-land flood zones need checking property by property.
- Korea’s short-term rental rules are strict.
- About 17 KTX trains a day reach Seoul’s Yongsan station in about 2 hr 45 min, and SRT trains run to Suseo.
- Yeosu Airport is about 20 minutes away by road.
- A direct airport bus runs to Incheon.
