Town Overview

Life in Sokcho

Seoraksan’s granite peaks rise behind the port, with lagoons and the East Sea in front. Sokcho is a one-of-a-kind base for mountain days and coastal life.

The Appeal

Sokcho is a compact East Sea port at the foot of Seoraksan, Korea’s most celebrated mountain park, with two lagoons, a beach, a refugee village on a sandbar and the freshest seafood on the coast.

Why It Made the Shortlist

Sokcho has the finest mountain scenery on the list and sits in Zone II, the lowest seismic band. Worth knowing: it ranks last on access, because its railways are still under construction, and on spring fire risk.

Worth Knowing

Plan around these:

  • Wildfire: high exposure on the Yanggan wind, as the 2019 Goseong-Sokcho fire showed.
  • Rail: none until the Chuncheon-Sokcho and coastal lines open, both now targeted for 2029.
  • Seasons and borders: heavy tourist seasonality, and military zones along the northern coast.
Getting There
  • About 45 express buses a day run to Seoul in about 2 hr 20 min.
  • Yangyang airport is about 20 km away.
  • Four airport buses a day run to Incheon.
  • Rail service to Seoul is targeted for 2029.
