Town Overview

Life in Chuncheon

Lakes and mountains frame a university city with rail links to Seoul. Chuncheon is an inland base for anyone who wants outdoor scenery without giving up city services.

The Appeal

Chuncheon is a provincial capital on the Bukhan and Soyang rivers, ringed by three dam lakes and forested mountains, with a fast train to Seoul, two universities, two major hospitals and the best Incheon access of the eight.

Why It Made the Shortlist

Chuncheon sits in Zone II, the lowest band of Korea’s seismic design standard, inland and beyond the reach of typhoon surge. It is the only low-hazard town on the list with Seoul about an hour and a quarter away by rail.

Worth Knowing
  • With about 285,000 people, it is the largest town in this Atlas.
  • Its heritage is thinner than in the southern towns.
  • Winters are cold, with river fog.
  • Hillside and lakeside lots need landslide and flood checks.
  • Military zones lie to the north.
Getting There
  • ITX-Cheongchun trains reach Seoul’s Yongsan station 17 times a day in about 1 hr 20 min, and the Gyeongchun commuter line also runs to Seoul.
  • The Seoul-Chuncheon Expressway links the city by road.
  • About 18 airport buses a day run to Incheon.
