Deventer
The Hanseatic City on the IJssel, Older Than Almost Anywhere in the Country
Explore the Town ↓Life in Deventer
The IJssel frames a skyline of towers, merchant houses and a great market square. Deventer’s book market and winter festivals add a lively calendar to an everyday regional city.
Deventer is one of the oldest towns in the Netherlands: a Hanseatic merchant city with a great Gothic church, a rescued medieval quarter and a river skyline, at prices well below the western cities.
Deventer offers most of Haarlem’s character at a much lower average valuation, in a real city of over 100,000. Its river risk is known, mapped and actively managed.
- The IJssel reaches the quay at high water, so riverside streets need a flood check.
- Schiphol is a long way by Dutch standards, roughly an hour and a half by train.
- Intercity trains run toward Amersfoort and Amsterdam.
- Schiphol is about 1 hr 30 min away by train with a change (the direct train was withdrawn in 2024), or about 1 hr 15 min by road.
