Town Overview

Life in Kanazawa

Kanazawa offers gardens, gold leaf, craft workshops and a food culture worth coming back for. It is a richly varied city stay, with historic neighborhoods and Shinkansen connections.

The Appeal

Kanazawa has Edo castle-town culture few cities outside Kyoto can match: Kenrokuen garden, four protected historic districts, the Omicho market and living crafts from gold leaf to Kutani ware, with Tokyo 2 hr 30 min away.

Why It Made the Shortlist

Kanazawa has the best culture and the best access on the list. Its earthquake figure from the Japan Seismic Hazard Information Station (J-SHIS), a 6.6 to 7.6% chance of very strong shaking (intensity 6-lower on Japan’s scale) within 30 years, is still low by national standards.

Worth Knowing

Three things to plan around:

  • A known fault: the Morimoto-Togashi fault runs through the city, with a 2 to 8% chance of a magnitude 7.2 earthquake within 30 years.
  • The 2024 Noto earthquake: it shook the city at intensity 5-upper and caused liquefaction along the dune fringe.
  • City scale: 454,000 people, visitor crowds and the most expensive land of the eight.
Getting There
  • The Hokuriku Shinkansen reaches Tokyo in about 2 hr 30 min.
  • Komatsu Airport is about 40 minutes away by bus.
  • Osaka is about 2 hr 30 min away, with a change at Tsuruga.
