Town Overview

Life in Hirosaki

Cherry blossom fills the castle moat in spring, while samurai streets and apple orchards give Hirosaki depth beyond the season. It is also a working university city with a major teaching hospital.

The Appeal

Hirosaki is a real castle town of about 156,000, with one of Japan’s twelve surviving original castle keeps, a samurai quarter, a university and some 2,600 cherry trees around the moats, in the orchards below Mt Iwaki.

Why It Made the Shortlist

Hirosaki is a full-service city with Aomori’s only advanced critical care center and Tokyo about 3 hr 30 min away. Its earthquake figure is among the lowest on the longlist: a 1.9% chance of very strong shaking (intensity 6-lower on Japan’s scale) within 30 years, according to the Japan Seismic Hazard Information Station (J-SHIS).

Worth Knowing
  • Deep snow falls from December to March, with the roof, heating and snow-clearing bills that follow.
  • It is in Japan’s far north.
  • Mt Iwaki, an active volcano 14 km west, is quiet at alert level 1 but on the map.
Getting There
  • Take the Tohoku Shinkansen to Shin-Aomori, then the Ou Line: about 3 hr 30 min to 3 hr 40 min from Tokyo.
  • Aomori Airport is about 55 minutes away by bus.
