Lüneburg
Brick Gables and Rail Links to Hamburg
Explore the Town ↓Life in Lüneburg
Brick gables and old salt-town streets lie just a train ride from Hamburg. Lüneburg offers historic character, university life and big-city access without big-city living.
Lüneburg is an intact Hanseatic town of stepped brick gables built on the wealth of salt, with a university, a lively center, the Lüneburg Heath at its southern edge and Hamburg half an hour away by fast train.
Lüneburg is seismically quiet: Lower Saxony has no earthquake zones at all on the official table of the German Institute for Building Technology (DIBt). A big-city airport and job market are within the hour, and this real town of about 75,000 lives all year.
Part of the western old town sits over a salt dome and is still sinking, by up to 13 cm a year in places according to the city’s own figures. We would not buy there. Elsewhere, expect a 5 percent purchase tax and Hamburg-commuter pricing.
- Hamburg is 30 minutes away by fast train.
- Hamburg airport is about an hour away by road, or 1 hr 5 min by rail; it has no nonstop US flights.
- Frankfurt airport is about 4 hr 10 min away by rail.
