Town Overview

Life in Lunenburg

Painted houses step down toward a working harbor in this UNESCO-listed Nova Scotian town. Lunenburg is a small-scale coastal choice for anyone drawn to historic streets and maritime life.

The Appeal

Old Town Lunenburg has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995. Its 1753 planned grid of painted timber houses climbs a hillside above a harbor that still builds boats and is home port to Bluenose II.

Why It Made the Shortlist

Lunenburg is the only UNESCO-inscribed small town on this list, and it sits outside the census areas covered by the federal purchase ban. The upper town stands on high ground above the storm-surge line.

Worth Knowing
  • With 2,396 people, the town is below this Atlas’s usual 5,000 floor.
  • Nova Scotia adds a 10 percent non-resident deed transfer tax on top of the price.
  • Expect summer fog and a short high season.
Getting There
  • Halifax Stanfield airport is about 110 km away, 1 hr 30 min to 1 hr 40 min on Highway 103.
  • It has nonstop flights to the US, with more routes in summer.
